Volunteer in Myanmar (Burma)

Browse Programs

Myanmar, also known as Burma, is currently best known in the western world for being the home nation of Aung Sung Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize winner and a Burmese political prisoner of 21 years. Burma is however much beyond its long running civil war and military rule which just ended in 2011. It is a nation of pine forests, quiet villages, various rivers, and of course, some large cities. It remains an nation struck by poverty and there is a need of volunteers.

Work with Refugees

Burma has seen a number of refugees due to its extremely long civil war. They have fled to various parts of Burma and some have even fled to neighbor Thailand. As a volunteer you will help organizations that work with refugees by providing support and working on a variety of tasks, such as educating them in English and other subjects, and also helping them find work.

Teach English
Burma has a very poor education system, particularly when it comes to English education. There is thus a need of native English speaking volunteers in the nation who will teach kids and youth English.

Volunteering Tips

Questions to Ask: What exactly will I be doing during my time in Burma? Will I have a fixed daily schedule, or will my schedule be more laidback? How much free time will I have on the weekdays and the weekends? Will I have an opportunity to visit other regions in Burma or possibly even other nations during my stay?

Best Places To Volunteer
  • Yangon: former capital, the nation’s largest city and commercial center.
  • Mandalay: former royal capital, second largest city; considered the hub of Burmese culture; interesting city to volunteer in due to the culture.
Health and Safety of Volunteers in Myanmar

As a volunteer, it is recommended that you get vaccinated for Hepatitis A & B, and Typhoid. If you plan on spending a lot of time outdoors, also get vaccinated for Rabies and Japanese Encephalitis. For more information visit .

Burma is a much safer nation than its neighbors in South and Southeast Asia. Nevertheless, you should still remain cautious and not carry valuable items when you go out.
