BridgeTEFL Graduate Level Online Course (150 Hours)

The Bridge IDELT Online (International Diploma in English Language Teaching – Online) is a 12-week, 150 hour online TEFL certification course. The graduate level content is delivered via a flexible, part-time schedule (about 8-12 hours of course work per week) which makes it the perfect option for students whose schedule or location makes it difficult to attend a classroom-based TESOL course (such as the Cambridge CELTA).

In partnership with the University of Northern Colorado, the IDELT Online provides the option of taking the course for 3 graduate-level credits -- perfect for those who may pursue an MA TESOL in the future. The course has been approved by ACCET (Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training), which is an organization recognized by the US Department of Education.

I did not know how much additional training and professional development in TEFL/TESOL I needed until I started taking the BridgeTEFL graduate level course. It was an exceptional experience that helped me not only revamp my skills in English language teaching but also equipped me with new theories and practices on the subject. You can hardly go through this program and come out untransformed, professionally. As a Ph.D. holder and ESL instructor, I went into this program with the intention of refreshing my skills and knowledge and has never regretted ever since.

IDELT Online

10/10

I hated online classes when I was an undergraduate student, and I was really taking a chance by taking the fully online IDELT course. It well exceeded my expectations! My teacher, Ann Leonard was very responsive and the peer support forum was a very useful tool. The two major assignments were especially practical and helpful in applying my learning; I only wish there had been another 1-2 projects. This course was extremely convenient and well worth my time!

How can this program be improved?

I think the price of the program (I could be wrong) is based on the ability to opt into the graduate credits, which I chose not to do. However, this program was great for my lifestyle and schedule so the convenience and course content paid for itself. Bridge was also particularly helpful in walking me through the MyCAA scholarship requirements, so all I had to do was pay $50 for my textbook. Only thing I might add is another 1-2 projects, since there were only two in addition to a weekly quiz.

Fantastic Course for First-Timers

9/10

I took this course after 4 years of teaching experience. I do feel like I learned a lot from the course and was inspired to continued towards my M.A. in Multilingual Education. The instructor was very kind and knowledgeable. The assignments made me think about the material. The textbook was incredible and probably one of the best I have had out of nearly 20 in my TESOL studies. However, many of the other students in the class were inexperienced with teaching. I also noticed a lot of the students did not put as much work into their assignments without even proofreading for simple errors.

It's a really great course for those who are looking for their initial TEFL certification but is not at the level of respect that CELTA and DELTA are, so keep that in mind if you are already TEFL-certified. Many companies and schools have never even heard of IDELT actually.

How can this program be improved?

A greater diversity of assignments would be really helpful. Instead of discussion posts and lesson plans, students would really benefit from presentations, curriculum development, video posting, etc.

A solid program with real value and multiple applications

9/10

It took me about 6 months, total, to complete the IDELT online program, along with 4 certifications: Grammar, Business English, Teaching Young Learners, and Teaching Online. The staff was great at being understanding and responsive to meeting my needs and addressing platform questions (Moodle was completely new to me).

I had never formally learned "how" to teach English before: the lesson planning in particular was a big challenge for me, which has ultimately paid wonderful dividends in workplace training planning. In fact, showing what I had learned in real lesson/training plans was instrumental in obtaining new opportunities in the L&D field, and helping other teacher/trainers to plan more effectively.

How can this program be improved?

The one suggestion I have to relay is to update the material/links. A lot of the links are quite dated, some as old as 10 or more years old, and this leads to some outdated theories and dead links.

Response from BridgeTEFL

Hi Kurt! Thank you for reviewing the IDELT Online course. We have relayed your comments about the outdated content and broken links to our curriculum specialist and technical team. We appreciate your feedback and are always working to improve the course. Congratulations on your TEFL certificate and best of luck with teaching!

Review by Kylie

9/10

This class helped me understand what it's like to teach in and ESL classroom in various different countries. I was able to interact with my classmates through discussion forums and see the different experiences some of them have experience so far teaching. I was very grateful to have such an amazing instructor who responded very quickly when I would email her. She was very helpful in giving feedback as well. I really did enjoy this class and the readings.

How can this program be improved?

Maybe if they added some video teaching as well. Also, more information on how to obtain graduate credit, I never got to receive it.

Response from BridgeTEFL

Hi Kylie! Thanks for your review of the IDELT Online program. We appreciate your feedback about the need for video content as well as the need for more clear instructions about how to receive graduate credit. We've passed your comments on to our curriculum specialist and admissions team, and will improve on these points for future students. Nice Surprise

7/10

On-line classes are not my favorite so I was pleasantly surprise with the quality of text, questions and videos provided by this class.

Videos were timely and held a variety of teaching styles.
The text was interesting and there was a sense that the author had actually been in the classroom and was able to weigh methodology.

I'm currently working with adult Korean women and I've been able to implement styles and strategies. Further I've found ways to do long term planning in ways that feel more balanced.

How can this program be improved?

1) More teacher oversight--it was week 6 before I got feedback
2) There was a platform shift mid course and I think not all data was moved. My request for credit was somehow not transferred. I didn't know that.
I received my certificate but no more information. When I started making inquiries I had to push to get any information. I immediately contacted U.N. C but they wouldn't allow my appeal because I missed the deadline date. The fact that I didn't know any of the dates didn't seem to enter into the conversation. I didn't receive support from Bridge even though I made my concern clear to them.

Response from BridgeTEFL

Hi Suzanne,

Thanks so much for your feedback! We're happy to hear that you were pleasantly surprised with the online course material -- online learning is a unique environment, so I'm happy to hear that you enjoyed the course overall.

As request for credit appeals are handled directly with the home institutions (and UNC specifically requested we remove ourselves from your individual situation), we've definitely taken note that this was a pain point for you as a participant. We'll definitely do our best to individualize the notifications for our participants and shed light on important upcoming deadlines.

Your feedback is welcomed and thanks for leaving a review of our program.

Idelt online course

10/10

I have honestly learned a lot with IDELT. Each unit covered every week was intense and I could use the techniques I had learned with my tutoring students. The instructor Terry was really helpful and always available to help us. Thank you Bridge for offering such a great and valuable course.

IDELT Online

8/10

The course was useful. I especially appreciated the videos and links to extra resources and materials. The text is helpful, though I can't say I enjoyed reading through the entire book chapter by chapter. The quizzes were straightforward and asked students to dig deeper into certain details of the readings. I didn't access the forum as much as I should have. Some students posted useful insights, but after writing my three posts, taking a quiz and responding to a post, I didn't have the energy to read through the rest of the posts. Perhaps the teacher could highlight a few posts each week that she found particularly good? Overall I was happy with the course.

How can this program be improved?

It depends on the student, where they will be teaching and whether or not they need the IDELT specifically. I came across a Living Social discount that offered a respectable TEFL certification for $70 (Originally over $900) which made me rethink the value of the course.

A great course

10/10

Before i got started on this course i had my doubts about online teacher training. much to my surprise i really enjoyed the weekly posts, writing them as well as reading the thoughts of the other (future) teachers. The course was time consuming, but definitely worth it. The instructor, terry, was very supportive and knowledgeable.

How can this program be improved?

More active support in finding a job afterwards. Since I am not a native speaker, finding employment turns out to be rather complicated. Many countries demand 'native' passports.
