Spring 2018 Study Abroad Programs

Across the northern hemisphere, Spring means warmer temperatures, blooming flowers, and students flocking to study abroad in some of the most popular study abroad destinations in the world. Whether you choose to seek cherry blossoms in Japan, tulips blooming in the Netherlands, or bright daffodils in rainy London, here's what you need to know to pick a perfect spring study abroad program for you.

Popular Destinations

If you want to study abroad in spring, this typically means the months of January to May, in the northern hemisphere.

Popular destinations for spring semester study abroad programs include Western Europe, such as Paris and Amsterdam; Asian destinations like Tokyo and Seoul; and North American cities including Toronto and New York City. Each of these cities has distinct winter and summer weather, making spring an ideal season to study abroad.

What to Pack for Spring Study Abroad

Studying abroad in spring means you need to pack for winter weather and summer weather, too! In many destinations, you'll experience at least a few weeks of cold and/or snowy weather in January and February, followed by increasingly warm weather as the season changes.

Consider packing for colder weather, as these items are typically more expensive to purchase while abroad; you can buy more budget-friendly summer clothes once the temperature increases. Also, be sure to pack a rain jacket, as spring is marked by "April showers" throughout the northern hemisphere.

Studying Abroad in Spring 2018

In spring 2018, the most exciting global event is the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea during February. If you decide to study in Asia during the spring semester, this is a great chance to travel and see the world's best athletes compete.

Other holidays, festivals, and events you may want to attend during your spring abroad:

  • Lantern Festival -- March 2nd in Taiwan
  • St. Patrick's Day -- March 17th in Ireland
  • Semana Santa -- March 25th to 31st in Spain
  • Songkran -- April 13th in Thailand
  • King's Day -- April 27th in the Netherlands
