No, I don't recommend this program

I completed the 120 hour no assistance course. Wasn't that impressed.
Some lessons contained filler and some were extremely short, barely enough info to fill a pamphlet. Some lessons were about 15 screens long but they were covering English tenses and these subjects needed the extra just for a basic explanation. I felt there weren't enough examples especially in the more complex lessons.
The number of questions at the end of each unit ranged from 10 - 20. In many cases there were 4 sometimes 5 questions on a particular item where the answers were abcd or adcb or acdb. None of them were aace or ccbb. So if you got one wrong you automatically got 2 wrong. Some questions harked back to previous lessons.
There are only 2 videos provided in this course, used to answer questions in units 10 and 11. I didn't use any guidance, practice teaching and I don't need the job assistance so I haven't commented. Replies to questions were answered quickly. There don't appear to be a huge number of resources for fledgling teachers.
You are only taught a single teaching method. It utilises 3 phases, Engage, Study, and Activate. There is no mention of newer methods such as class/lesson flipping or gamification. Some of the material seems a little dated.
Finally, a pass of only 75% is needed. You get exactly the same certificate for a 95% pass as you would for a 75% pass so there is no need to bust your ass if you just want the certificate. There apparently is an accompanying letter which will assign a grade of A, B or C automatically. I asked for my % to be put on my certificate or covering letter but the response was that it wasn't something they offered. Certificates and letters are printed automatically.I couldn't even get a 2 line letter on their letterhead to say what score I actually got instead of just A B C.
In summary they deliver exactly what they say and nothing more. The course could be completed with a bit of effort in 3-4 weeks, less for some people. Ask for a sample lesson before you commit to the course.I'd recommend the course if you just want a certificate as soon as possible otherwise it's 50-50 from me. You can get a free short course if you leave a video review after completion and a moderator approves it. I elected not to do this.

What would you improve about this program?
A bit more flexibility in handling students requests, especially regarding their scores.
More content needed. Use % attained on certificate and/or accompanying letter rater than
A B or C.

No, I don't recommend this program

I took the Online course without the need of a tutor. Unfortunately I would not advise this course or company to others. The course information given was far too simple and vague. So simple you are able to pass the tests with no problem but so vague that it doesn’t give you detailed information needed to write proper lesson plans or to really teach in a class room. When I reached several questions that clearly had errors or where to vague to understand, I reached out to the company for answers and was only told to pay for a tutor. Once I arrived to the lesson plan final I wrote one based off of the information provided to me through the course. Unfortunately I was told that it was wrong and to do it over. Needless to say I stressed and stressed about with no real help or clear guidance from the company. With the help of a friend who has been teacher for year abroad, she taught me to write a proper lesson plan. I was granted a certificate but the last letter of my name was spelled wrong. I ask for the correction and was told I would have to pay $25 - $85 dollars to have it corrected with a “it’s not my job” type of attitude and policy. “We don’t crossed check names.” Thank for the poor customer service. The price was the cheapest was the course was the cheapest at the time so I signed up. Now I see why it’s cheap. Definitely a disgusting, discouraged and angry customer.

What would you improve about this program?
Please write a better course for online takers. Detailed and informative. Not vague and lacking information. Be more considerate of your clients and what they are paying for instead of just getting money out of them anyway you can. Have better customer service and actually double check the information that is given to you by clients.

Thanks for submitting a review Dametria,

We’re sorry to hear that the ITTT course didn’t meet your expectations. The vast majority of course graduates are extremely satisfied with their course and experience with ITTT. This is reflected in our high overall scores on several review sites.

With regard to your certificate name, after you submit the exact name you would like to appear on the certificate you are asked to review the information provided to ensure its accuracy before proceeding. It would appear that you didn’t notice that you had misspelt your name at the time. The $25 charge covers a reprint of your certificate and delivery via registered post.

All the best with your teaching plans. Please contact our staff at any time if you need any assistance.

Yes, I recommend this program

This company was helpful from the start, and still is, ten years later with their follow-ups. The tutor assigned to you guides you and does not cut corners. I am glad I took this course. You get good feedback from the tutor. Unfortunately, because I too this course about ten years ago, I cannot remember the details. What I would say is, if you are thinking of teaching English, get some training in teaching English to non-natives. It does not hurt the opportunities that can open up for you. ITTT was reasonable and offers various types of classes and options. One is to study with or without a tutor, online and/or in-class. Iopted for online with a tutor, this choice was because of my location and also because I was employed full-time. I hope my limited information is helpful.

Yes, I recommend this program

It was only 4 short weeks, but I don’t think ever learned so much in so little time. This TEFL course was intensive, but it was engaging and fun throughout. We were guided each step of the way.

For me, the heart and soul of the training part of the program were the observed teaching practices. But before we even stepped into a classroom, we had to learn how to formulate a professional lesson plan. That included defining learner objectives, teacher aims, and complete lesson procedure under the ESA methodology, which we were taught beforehand.

And before I was given feedback for the trainers, I was asked to complete a self-evaluation form. After that, I got detailed feedback on my teaching session. That’s was a key component in the development of my teaching skills.

I was always given a challenge for my next class—in areas the trainers thought I still needed to work on. The bottom line is that I’m now ready to step into any classroom and successfully teach English.

Equally good was the superb help Vantage provided on securing me a teaching position. They have a separate “Jobs Coach” trainer who sat with me and we created my own individual Power Resume and cover letter. The class was coached on interviewing skills and then we had access into Vantage’s network of schools and recruiting services.

All of us had interviews arrange the last week of the course and I accepted a great teaching job with a week of graduation. I also watch the Jobs Coach help alums who already completed their first year of teaching but wanted assistance in new job placements.

If you want a career in teaching—and access to some of the best teaching positions in Thailand—this is your team.

Travis Thomas

Travis is an ambassador in cross-cultural relations with a passion for teaching and learning through global citizenship. He is currently teaching English and developing businesses in Bogota, Colombia.

Three persons talking over some drinks.

Why did you choose this program?

I chose this program with the intent of being self-employed and continuing in my pursuit of living cross-culturally. I chose this program to advance in my goals and better my life. I desired to live intentional, and this program provided with the tools and resources to do just that. I wanted to have control of my destiny and to possess my work, and this program provided me with this opportunity

What did your program provider (or university) assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

The program provided me with the resources and the tools to be a proficient teacher of English as a foreign language. It was up to me to seek out the opportunities and then apply them so I can make a living teaching.

The program does not work without the execution. I gained the knowledge necessary to change my life, and it was up to me to apply that knowledge through wise choices.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

I would advise that they pace themselves, master the art of incrementalism, take little bites at a time, and be patient. Just like learning any new trade or skill, you want to take your time and truly absorb the content and information. When the opportunity arises to apply what you know, take those opportunities.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

I usually wake up around 8 AM or 7 PM depending on when I have a class. I teach my classes, and study. Any spare time I divide between leisure and business ventures. The program was not arduous nor overbearing, I was able to complete it in three weeks and then immediately apply the skills I had acquired to teaching English classes.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

My biggest fear was moving abroad and not being able to sustain myself. What if I don't book enough classes? However, after 1 month of working, I had made enough to pay my rent and more. I succeeded quicker than I expected. Don't be afraid to take the risk of going abroad, and don't underestimate your ability to swim in unknown waters. Find the security and peace of mind to invest in yourself.

Some more advice.

As you are growing abroad, simply plan as much as you can, even for spontaneous exploration. Never be afraid to wander, allow yourself to get lost, and work your way out of foreign places and circumstances.

If you never test yourself in these spaces, you'll never uncover the hidden potential and resourcefulness you have.

Give yourself over to the process of risk and new experiences. Create meaningful connection as much as you can, and don't be afraid to ask for help from people around you, even strangers. The world is much more inviting than you can imagine.

John Coan

Tell us a little about yourself. What position do you hold there?

I’m John and I’m the head trainer. I’ve been teaching English for over 20 years, mostly here in Prague.

What makes Prague a unique destination to obtain a TEFL Certification?

Prague is a very beautiful city – most visitors fall in love with the place. Everything is still reasonably priced, so your money will go a lot further here than in, say, Paris or London. It’s also very nicely located – you can be in Berlin, Vienna, or Budapest in just a few hours. It’s also helpful that there are a lot of language schools in Prague, so your employment options are greater than in many other European cities.

We are proud of our course. We’re dedicated teacher trainers who have spent many years working in the field. Over the four weeks, you will gain vital skills and knowledge, and we will make sure that every trainee benefits as much as they can, both through classroom input sessions and individual guidance.

We have an excellent library and you will have the chance to use this to help plan your lessons. You will also have the opportunity to teach young learners on the course – practical and rewarding experience that in fact many courses of this type do not offer.

What are some extracurricular activities students participate in during this course? (Does your training centre offer any guided tours?)

We have a very friendly staff who will help organize outings for the trainees, depending on their interests. Typically people who take the course want to see the city and guided tours are often planned early in the course. There will be trips to Czech restaurants and pubs, too, and we can help you plan a visit to the opera, Prague Castle, or the famous Black Light Theatre.

Please bear in mind however that as the course is intensive in nature, you will not have a great deal of free time during the four weeks of study.

Do students generally stay in Prague to teach after completing this course? (How does this course help students teach abroad? What are some other popular destinations?)

It really depends on the individual. Some trainees want to go back home to think about their next move, and some can’t stand to leave Prague once the course is over! Whatever you decide to do, we can help and advise.

What is one piece of advice you would offer someone considering obtaining TEFL Certification in Prague?

I would advise someone to think carefully about whether they want to teach English to foreigners. If they have the desire and a bit of talent in that area, then we will do our very best to help develop this, and give them the tools they need to do a very good job in the classroom.
